What do Tiger Woods, Tom Cruise, David Beckham and Jessica Alba have in common? They’re all avid divers! Many celebrities, athletes, and musicians are turning to diving as a form of leisure and a break from life in the fast lane! Check out our list of star studded divers (you may be surprised at some of the names!):
Tiger Woods, Professional Golfer
When Tiger Woods isn’t training for his 15th Masters title, he enjoys to spend his time below the surface. Tiger is an avid Freediver, SCUBA diver and Spearfshermen. Woods owns a home in Jupiter Island and frequently hunts for fish in the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. In 2015, Woods wrote on his website that he didn’t watch the final round of The Open because he was Freediving and Spearfishing.
David Beckham, Professional Soccer Player
Star athlete, entrepreneur and South Florida resident David Beckham recently took the plunge to become a freediver. Beckham recently received Freedive training from French World Champion Freediver Morgan Bourc’his.

Jessica Alba, Actress
Born in Pomona California, Jessica Alba developed a love for the water at a young age. Alba began freediving in preparation for the filming of the movie “The New Adventures of Flipper” and later “Into the Blue” with Paul Walker. When asked by the Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm about the filming of “Into the Blue” (set in the Bahamas), Alba responded “I get to get paid to go diving in the Caribbean for four months?! Fine!”
Tom Cruise, Actor
Tom Cruise is famous for doing his own stunts, this did not change while filming Mission Impossible- Rogue Nation where he was required to hold his breath underwater for 6+ minutes at a time. Cruise completed vigorous Freedive training prior to the making of the movie. “I had to learn how to hold my breath underwater for over six minutes for freediving because the takes are really long. It’s the longest underwater sequence I’ve ever done and the way the director did it, I had to train beyond it because when you go to shoot I have to take the regulator out, get on the side of the set underwater, then the camera comes into place and then we call action. It was just very long takes… and we wanted to do it practical (sic).” -Tom Cruise
Kate Winslet, Actress
Anything boys can do, girls can do better 🙂 while filming Avatar 2, Kate Winslet easily smashed Tom Cruise (unofficial) record with a static apnea of over 7 minutes! “I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar, and that was just incredible. My longest breath hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff” – Kate Winslet
Prince William and Kate Middleton
British Royal Family- The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, recently completed her PADI Open Water certification, joining her husband as an experienced SCUBA Diver. Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, has spent many hours under the sea, and serves president of British Sub-Aqua Club. “Scuba diving really has opened my eyes not only to many extraordinary sights, but also to the responsibilities that we have as guardians of the underwater world,” said Prince William, “I hope that one day my son, George, will also experience the wonders that snorkelling and scuba diving have to offer.”
Mark Healey, Professional Surfer
Mark Healey is known for riding 60 foot waves, but did you know he can also hold his breath for 6+ minutes?! In addition to being a legendary big wave surfer, Mark Healey is also a free diver, spearfisherman, conservationist, skydiver, bow hunter, yoga practitioner, photographer, filmmaker and Hollywood stuntman. Mark has quickly become the go to expert for applying scientific tagging devices to various little known about species of shark like the Thresher and Hammerhead while working in conjunction with international scientific research projects.
Kevin Costner, Actor/Filmaker
Kevin Costner grew up with a deep love and respect for the ocean. In addition to music and baseball, the Bull Durham actor also enjoys freediving and spearfishing. Check out the 57lb Halibut speared off the coast of California!
