Freediving and Spearfishing in the Bahamas: The Ultimate Adventure

The Bahamas, in our opinion, is the best place in the world for freediving and spearfishing. With crystal-clear waters, miles of vibrant coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life, it offers an unparalleled experience just a short trip from Florida. Whether you’re hunting for fish or capturing marine creatures on camera, the Bahamas is a paradise. From sharks, dolphins, and turtles to the famous Dean’s Blue Hole, this archipelago offers everything an ocean enthusiast could ask for. In this guide, we’ll cover how to get there, what to expect when spearfishing, and how to make the most of your Bahamian adventure.
How to Get to the Bahamas
There are several ways to travel to the Bahamas, but depending on your goals and equipment needs, some methods might work better than others. Here’s a breakdown of the options:
1. By Private Boat
This is our favorite way to travel to the Bahamas! A private boat allows you to bring more gear, supplies, and food—and even your catch—back to Florida. We’ve made the crossing to the Bahamas on our own boat, Fins Up, many times. However, boating to the Bahamas requires preparation.
Clearing Customs by Boat
Upon arrival, boaters must clear customs at an official entry port, such as West End, Bimini, or Marsh Harbour. Everyone on board will need a valid passport, and the captain must submit an arrival report. Make sure you review the latest Bahamas Customs procedures before setting sail.
Bringing Fish Back to Florida by Boat
It’s essential to understand the regulations around bringing fish back to Florida. Fish harvested in the Bahamas must remain intact (meaning no filleting at sea), and there are specific rules for certain species. You can find the most up-to-date information here: Bringing Fish Back to Florida from The Bahamas | FWC.
Safety First: Preparing for the Gulf Stream Crossing
Crossing the Gulf Stream can be challenging, so boating experience and safety equipment are critical. Ensure your vessel has had maintenance checks, enough fuel, and emergency equipment like life vests, EPIRBs, and satellite communication tools. We recommend the Garmin InReach Mini 2, which offers reliable messaging and tracking offshore: Garmin InReach Mini 2. If you’re a beginner, crossing with other boats experienced with the route is highly recommended.
2. By Plane
Flying is the fastest way to get to the Bahamas. There are several direct flights from Florida to key islands such as Nassau, Freeport, and North Eleuthera. Once there, you can take ferries to reach more remote destinations like Spanish Wells.
- Pros of Flying: Quick access to more distant islands that are harder to reach by boat.
- Cons of Flying: Limited baggage space, especially for spearfishing equipment, and restrictions on bringing seafood back to the U.S. Check with your airline regarding policies.

3. By Ferry or Cruise Ship
Although we haven’t explored this method, local ferries and cruise ships also offer transportation to the Bahamas. These options may be better suited for travelers not bringing spearfishing equipment.
What It’s Like Spearfishing in the Bahamas
Spearfishing in the Bahamas is a unique and rewarding challenge. The country has strict regulations that promote sustainability and healthy reefs, creating an unforgettable experience for divers and spearfishers.
- Primitive Gear Only: In the Bahamas, spearfishing is limited to Hawaiian slings and pole spears. No spearguns or devices with triggers are allowed, and hunting on SCUBA is prohibited. We highly recommend Neritic Diving for all of your Bahamian spearfishing equipment needs. They are a Florida-based company that specializes in gear designed for the Bahamas: Neritic Diving.
- Self-Regulated Sustainability: The restrictions not only create an exciting challenge but also help maintain vibrant reefs and abundant fish populations. It’s an approach we wish we had in Florida!
- Abundant Marine Life: The Bahamas is home to prized species like hogfish, grouper, snapper, and spiny lobster. On any given day, you can dive among these fish while surrounded by healthy corals.
- Sharks Are a Part of the Experience: Seeing sharks on a dive here is common and an indication of a healthy ecosystem. However, they can pose a challenge. Sharks are often drawn to the vibrations of a speared fish, so you must retrieve your catch quickly. If the sharks become too aggressive, it’s best to move to another location.
Our Favorite Places to Explore in the Bahamas
While the Bahamas boasts nearly 700 islands, some of our favorites are in the northern part of the archipelago due to their proximity to Florida and incredible underwater experiences.
- Grand Bahama and the Abacos: These islands are only a 1.5 to 4-hour boat ride from South Florida, making them ideal for a weekend adventure. The reefs here offer excellent spearfishing opportunities, and the islands themselves are rich with culture.
- Local Culture and Traditions: The Bahamas offers more than just marine adventures! The Junkanoo Festival, colorful houses, delicious food, and friendly locals make each trip memorable. We love enjoying the local music, fresh seafood, and unique Bahamian flavors after a day of diving.
Tips for Visiting the Bahamas for Freediving and Spearfishing
To make the most of your time in the Bahamas, a little preparation goes a long way.
1. Take a Freediving Course
Freediving is the foundation for spearfishing, and learning proper techniques ensures safety and success. Trying to spearfish without freediving experience is like running before you can walk. We offer both freediving and spearfishing courses to help you prepare—whether you want to train locally in Palm Beach or join one of our international trips. Check out our courses:
2. Do Your Research
Before your trip, research local regulations and the specific areas you’ll be visiting. Some islands have stricter rules, and marine parks prohibit fishing. Talking to locals or watching YouTube travel guides can help you better understand where and how to dive.
3. Be Shark-Savvy
The Bahamas is known for its abundance of sharks, which adds excitement and complexity to spearfishing. As soon as you spear a fish, get it out of the water quickly to avoid attracting sharks. If the sharks become aggressive, don’t hesitate to move to another spot.
4. Book a Local Charter
If you’re new to the area, booking a spearfishing charter is a great way to increase your chances of success. Local captains know the waters well and can take you to the best spots for diving and fishing.
5. Be Respectful
The Bahamas welcomes visitors with open arms, but it’s essential to respect local cultures and regulations. Be sure to purchase a Bahamian fishing license. Treat the environment as if it were your own, and follow the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
