How to Get to the Bahamas
There are several ways to travel to the Bahamas, but depending on your goals and equipment needs, some methods might work better than others. Here’s a breakdown of the options:
1. By Private Boat
This is our favorite way to travel to the Bahamas! A private boat allows you to bring more gear, supplies, and food—and even your catch—back to Florida. We’ve made the crossing to the Bahamas on our own boat, Fins Up, many times. However, boating to the Bahamas requires preparation.
Clearing Customs by Boat
Upon arrival, boaters must clear customs at an official entry port, such as West End, Bimini, or Marsh Harbour. Everyone on board will need a valid passport, and the captain must submit an arrival report. Make sure you review the latest Bahamas Customs procedures before setting sail.

Fish harvested in the Bahamas must remain intact (meaning no filleting at sea), and there are specific rules for certain species. Crossing the Gulf Stream can be challenging, so boating experience and safety equipment are critical. Ensure your vessel has had maintenance checks, enough fuel, and emergency equipment like life vests, EPIRBs, and satellite communication tools. 2. By Plane
Flying is the fastest way to get to the Bahamas. There are several direct flights from Florida to key islands such as Nassau, Freeport, and North Eleuthera. Once there, you can take ferries to reach more remote destinations like Spanish Wells.
- Pros of Flying: Quick access to more distant islands that are harder to reach by boat.
- Cons of Flying: Limited baggage space, especially for spearfishing equipment, and restrictions on bringing seafood back to the U.S. Check with your airline regarding policies.

3. By Ferry or Cruise Ship
Although we haven’t explored this method, local ferries and cruise ships also offer transportation to the Bahamas. These options may be better suited for travelers not bringing spearfishing equipment.
What It’s Like Spearfishing in the Bahamas

- Abundant Marine Life: The Bahamas is home to prized species like hogfish, grouper, snapper, and spiny lobster. On any given day, you can dive among these fish while surrounded by healthy corals.
- Sharks Are a Part of the Experience: Seeing sharks on a dive here is common and an indication of a healthy ecosystem. However, they can pose a challenge. Sharks are often drawn to the vibrations of a speared fish, so you must retrieve your catch quickly. If the sharks become too aggressive, it’s best to move to another location.
Our Favorite Places to Explore in the Bahamas
While the Bahamas boasts nearly 700 islands, some of our favorites are in the northern part of the archipelago due to their proximity to Florida and incredible underwater experiences.
- Grand Bahama and the Abacos: These islands are only a 1.5 to 4-hour boat ride from South Florida, making them ideal for a weekend adventure. The reefs here offer excellent spearfishing opportunities, and the islands themselves are rich with culture.
