Ocean Huntress is more than a women’s spearfishing retreat, it’s an opportunity to challenge yourself, build confidence, and experience the ocean in a whole new way. Whether you’re completely new to freediving or already have experience underwater, you’ll spend an unforgettable week learning, exploring, and connecting with an incredible community of women in the breathtaking Sea of Cortez.

Throughout the week, you’ll learn freediving fundamentals, ocean safety, fish identification, responsible harvesting practices, spearfishing techniques, and how to prepare a sustainable catch-to-table meal.

Because spearfishing is about so much more than catching a fish, it’s about understanding where your food comes from, respecting the ocean, and creating a deeper connection with the underwater world.

You’ll leave with new skills, unforgettable memories, and lifelong friendships with women who share your passion for the ocean.

Explore La Ventana & The Sea of Cortez

Nestled between the mountains of Baja California Sur and the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortez, La Ventana is a hidden gem known for its incredible marine life, wild beauty, and endless ocean adventures.

While winter brings world-famous winds for kiteboarding and windsurfing, late spring offers something special: calm seas, warm water, incredible visibility, and unforgettable encounters beneath the surface.

Often called “the world’s aquarium,” the Sea of Cortez is home to vibrant reefs, mobula rays, dolphins, sea turtles, whales, and an incredible diversity of marine life.

Each day on the water brings a new adventure. We’ll let the ocean guide our itinerary as we explore reefs, practice our freediving skills, search for wildlife, and make the most of everything Baja has to offer.

Freediving Training

Freediving is the foundation of everything we’ll do during Ocean Huntress.

Whether you’re brand new to freediving or already certified, this retreat is designed to meet you where you are and help you build confidence in the water.

Already Level 1 Freediver certified? Great! You’ll receive a refresher on safety, equalization, buddy procedures, and depth progression before we begin spearfishing.

Not yet certified? You can add your PADI Freediver certification for $150, which includes eLearning, certification fees, and additional instruction throughout the retreat.

Ethical Spearfishing Experience

Discover the fundamentals of sustainable spearfishing in a supportive, women-focused environment.

You’ll learn:

• Spearfishing equipment and setup
• Ocean safety and dive planning
• Fish identification
• Local regulations and responsible harvesting
• Hunting techniques
• Catch care and preparation

Choosing to harvest is completely up to you. Our goal is to help you understand the process, build confidence, and develop a deeper respect for the ocean and its resources.

Whether your goal is to harvest your first fish or simply better understand the sport, we’ll teach you the knowledge, safety, and techniques needed to become a confident and responsible ocean hunter.

New to freediving? Add your PADI Freediver certification to the retreat. This includes eLearning, certification processing, and additional instruction throughout the week.

Guests who are already certified will receive a refresher on safety, equalization, buddy procedures, and depth progression before entering the spearfishing portion of the retreat.

Day 1: Arrival, welcome dinner & introductions
Day 2: Freediving theory, pool training & yoga
Day 3: Line dive training, reef exploration & fish identification
Day 4: Spearfishing skills, equipment overview & ocean practice
Day 5: Boat adventure exploring the Sea of Cortez
Day 6: Final ocean adventure, catch-to-table dinner & gyotaku workshop
Day 7: Farewell morning & departures

Meet Your Hosts

Keke McBride

Founder of Live Free Diving, PADI Freediver Instructor Trainer, and one of the few female PADI Freediver Instructor Trainers in the United States, Keke has dedicated her career to helping people discover confidence and connection through the ocean.

With years of experience teaching freediving, leading international retreats, and building ocean communities, Keke brings a calm, encouraging teaching style that helps students feel supported while pushing their boundaries.

Aubrey Purschke

Aubrey is a PADI Freediver Instructor, licensed captain, and longtime Baja California Sur resident. After years living and working aboard yachts around the world, she found her way back to Baja and made it home.

Passionate about creating welcoming spaces for women in the ocean, Aubrey created Ocean Huntress to help more women discover the confidence to freedive, spearfish, and experience the ocean in a completely new way.

Together, Keke and Aubrey combine world-class freediving instruction with local Baja knowledge to create an unforgettable week of adventure, learning, and connection.

Your Home in Baja

We’ll stay together in a private villa in La Ventana, just minutes from the beach. This will be our home base for the week, a place to relax, share meals, unwind after ocean adventures, and connect with an incredible group of women.
